Uncommon Threads

Elise and I have been wearing the same five outfits for the last ten months. That sort of thing is simply a fact of life when you travel. We’d rather spend our money on fun, once-in-a-lifetime-type stuff than on new threads. As we approach the home stretch of this trip we find ourselves fantasizing about all the new stuff we want to buy when we get home – clothes, furniture, a decent haircut – so when we heard about the so-called ‘personal tailoring’ for cheap cheap cheap in the Vietnamese town of Hoi An we jumped on it. We were pretty sceptical about the skill of the tailors and quality of clothes at first, but when you think about it, chances are you’ve got something in your wardrobe with a tag on it that says “Made in Vietnam” (or Thailand or China  or wherever) that you paid an exorbitant amount for. Well, that same clothing can be bought in Hoi An for a fraction of the price – custom tailored, no less! Needless to say we jumped on the opportunity to design our own one-of-a-kind outfits. I went straight for the suits and Elise went straight for the dresses and skirt suits – hey, we’ve gotta look good for all those job interviews when we get back! Turns out we’re pretty damn good designers, and there really is NOTHING like a suit made-to-measure (with tailored shirt and tie too!). Look for the new ‘Gully Collection’ that hits runways during this summer’s wedding season.

On another note, does everyone recall the latest Earth Hour? I have my reservations regarding its effectiveness when it’s celebrated in the developed world so I was shocked to learn that they actually observe Earth Hour in Vietnam. Vietnam: a developing country that probably has its fair share of UNPLANNED blackouts. In other words, a lot of people in Vietnam probably celebrate Earth Hour involuntarily all the time. Does anyone else see the irony in that?
